The importance of having a creative process in your workplace

We often think up processes for each stage of the production or work flow in our businesses. These processes become fixed and rigid, and, if everything and everyone follows this process, we get a particular result which was thought up at the beginning. But what happens when the conditions outside of this process changes? For example, when the costs of production change? Or the competing firm delivers a new product? Or your offer of a service is no longer selling like it used to? These are all times where innovation is needed to keep the company going, and the products or services attractive to those who might purchase them.

A creative process embedded into your workflow is important because it helps you to recognise when you might need to engage in further innovation. This is because creative processes start with problems, and they start with reflection.

These creative processes can be launched when you encounter a problem in the normal workflow that you have in place. Perhaps something doesn’t work right, or something on the outside has changed to disrupt the process. You therefore experience a problem, and if you’re able to recognise that this problem exists, you can begin to think about how to solve it, using the creative tools that you’ve set in place.

The other time you might recognise that you need to engage further in a creative process is when you, on a regular basis, take the time to reflect on your business, its place in the market, and its offer to its customers. When you’ve mapped out everything that’s going on, and can see everything from a birds-eye view, your new perspective can bring new ideas, potential improvements, and more. That’s what the creative process is about – changing perspectives to see things from different angles, and realising the places where you can create!

Without this creative process, which in business starts not by thinking up new and wonderful ideas from nowhere, but from a problem or a reflection that you or your colleagues have had, you might miss opportunities to evolve and innovate, and can become stuck with ongoing inefficiencies and unrecognised problems in your business. Taking the time to stop, reflect, and think about new ideas is essential to keeping your business alive in the 21st century.
